The exhibition "In the Shadow of Dictatorship: Creating the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art" presents a selection of over forty paintings and sculptures on loan from the extraordinary collection of the Museo Abstracto Español de Cuenca. During an era when Spanish abstract artists found success abroad yet struggled for recognition at home, the artist and collector Fernando Zóbel (1924-84) established the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha. The museum opened to the public on July 1, 1966, and was the first institution in Spain dedicated exclusively to abstraction.
