Wednesday, March 1, 2023 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Presenter: Kale Doyen
202 Frick Fine Arts Building

In this colloquium, graduate student Kale Serrato Doyen will present her MA thesis titled The Oppositional Landscape Photography of Charles “Teenie” Harris. Harris (1908-1998) was a prolific twentieth-century photographer, best remembered for his studio practice and photojournalism for the Black newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier. Whereas scholarship of Harris has centered his peopled work, this thesis investigates his landscape photography. Kale will present a sequence of nine landscape photographs taken by Harris between 1957-1962 as he documented the transformation of the Lower Hill District during the city’s urban renewal program, the Pittsburgh Renaissance. By leveraging the art historical conventions of landscape, this thesis offers an analysis of the underlying artistic and political frameworks of Harris’s landscape photography.
