Indigenous Peoples' Day Programs with Dr. Jessie Ryker-Crawford

Tuesday, October 10, 2023 - 2:30pm to 5:00pm

As part of ongoing conversations between Carnegie Museum of Natural History staff and members of the HAA community on the subjects of land acknowledgment, decolonization, and Indigenous representation and collaboration, please save the date for two days of programming featuring Dr. Jessie Ryker-Crawford. Dr. Ryker-Crawford (White Earth Chippewa) is Professor of Museum Studies and Director of the MFA in Cultural Administration Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM. A sociocultural anthropologist with a PhD from the University of Washington, Jessie researches, teaches, and consults on the Indigenization and decolonization of museums in the North American context. These events are co-organized and co-sponsored by HAA and CMNH with support from a Provost’s Year of Engagement grant.

Please join us for the following event, open to the HAA community:

Tuesday, October 10, 2:30-5 pm, Earth Theater, CMNH:

Jessie will convene a session of Dr. Jennifer Josten’s current “Constellations of Art History” seminar, an HAA graduate course focused on reparative practices for redressing past and present harms against structurally marginalized communities within the history of art and architecture and the museum profession. Dr. Ryker-Crawford will guide an object-based discussion on the nuances in scenarios regarding repatriation and other ethical practices of collaborative collections care, followed by an open conversation and Q&A. Pitt faculty and students not enrolled in the seminar, as well as CMNH staff, are invited to attend. Capacity is limited, so please use this link to RSVP to express interest and receive further details closer to the date.
