What would it mean for computers to perform research? Using The Next Rembrandt project (https://www.nextrembrandt.com/) as a case study, I will address in this talk—from the point of view of a digitally-inflected approach to humanistic interpretation—a number of the fundamental issues and assumptions that I see surrounding the role of digital computation in the research process today.
