The Pitt News Features UAG Caribbean Exhibits

The University Art Gallery hosted an Opening Celebration for the three exhibits currently on view. "The Kingdom of This World Reimagined" is a traveling exhibit in partnership with Carlow Art Gallery which features a selection of contemporary work inspired by Alejo Carpentier’s historical novel, The Kingdom of This World, which recounts the Haitian revolution and its profound impact on the emergent nation. "Agua Firme" is a site-specific installation by iliana emilia García and Scherezade García in the gallery's historic Rotunda. This piece incorporates video, sound and sculpture to explore how water and maritime culture shaped the history and identity of Las Americas. Finally, the museum studies student curated exhibition, "Printing Culture: Gráfica de Puerto Rico , 1958-63" showcases a selection of original silk screen posters from the instituto de cultura puertorriqueña, which were designed by some of the leading graphic artists of the time and reflect the vibrant and evolving culture of Puerto Rico during this period.

The opening celebration featured music provided by John Bagnato and Manny Berrido from the Music Department. There was also a special performance by Zuly Inirio, Founder of the Afro-Latinx Song and Opera Project.

All of the exhibits run until March 1, 2023. The University Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 12-4pm and til 7pm on Thursdays. The Gallery is closed on all University holidays
