On October 16, Erin Perry, executive director of the Legacy Arts Project, led a dynamic workshop for students enrolled in the course Arts of Africa. Based in Homewood, The Legacy Arts Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the arts of Africa and its diasporas through performance, education, and community programs. Perry introduced the history of African dance performance in Pittsburgh and highlighted the vibrant approaches to African cultural expression practiced in local communities today. She offered candid insight into the challenges and rewards of leading a community-engaged arts organization. Perry also taught students sequences from West African and diasporic dance traditions, facilitating an embodied approach to learning about the continent's arts.
