“Back of Painted Beyond”

How might we talk about the correspondences, even conversations, among paintings that elude art historical labeling and contextualizing? Paintings are materially limited but metaphysically limitless.  How do backgrounds, for example, intimate all that lies beyond that which is visible?  Where do vanishing points go when they vanish?

Professor MICHAEL ANN HOLLY is the Starr Director Emeritus of the Research and Academic Program, Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA. Previously she was the co-founder of the Visual and Cultural Studies Graduate Program at the University of Rochester.  An historiographer of art history, her most recent book is The Melancholy Art (Princeton, 2013).
