Curator, University Art Gallery
The Department of History of Art and Architecture (HAA) at the University of Pittsburgh seeks to hire a Curator for the University Art Gallery. The University Art Gallery is central to the mission of HAA and its innovative Constellations program. It also plays a dynamic role in our Collecting Knowledge Pittsburgh consortium of local collections-based museums, archives, and libraries, and in our partnerships with the Studio Arts Department, the university community, and the diverse publics that make up the broader Pittsburgh region. The curator works closely with the Director of the University Art Gallery, who is also Chair of HAA. Responsibilities include curating exhibits to further the educational and public outreach missions of the History of Art and Architecture and Studio Arts Departments, and of other units inside and outside the university on request; and, while there is no required teaching load for this position, the curator will be actively engaged with the Museum Studies minor and its exhibition studies course, and will mentor graduate and undergraduate students who participate as interns and assistants. Additional duties include maintaining and strengthening the conditions of the gallery space; managing the condition, care, and documentation of our permanent collection of over 3,000 objects; making our collection available for study by faculty and students; developing and maintaining collection management policies, grant writing, and handling loan agreements; chairing the University Art Gallery committee and serving as its liaison to the Department; and engaging in research related to the permanent collection and to the gallery’s exhibitions and programming.
The starting date is September 1, 2018. This is a full-time, non-tenure stream position. Eligible candidates must hold the PhD degree in art history, museum studies, or a related field; teaching and full-time curatorial experience are also required. In order to ensure full consideration, applications must be received by February 5, 2018. Applications should include a cover letter describing the candidate’s interest in and qualifications for the position, résumé, and statement of curatorial philosophy. Three letters of recommendation, sent under separate cover, are also required. All of these materials--application and letters--should be emailed with the subject heading “Curator Search” to firstname.lastname@example.org. You may address these materials to: Barbara McCloskey, Chair, UAG Search Committee, 104 Frick Fine Arts, Department of History of Art and Architecture, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
