HAA 1910: Special Topics Architecture - Window Restoration
Class#23254
M + W 8:30 - 11:45am
B5 FKART
Brendan Froeschl
Enrollment Limit: 6
Utilizing the facilities of the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh (WSP), a hands-on window restoration course would cover the full rehabilitation of
historic double-hung wooden windows. The course would be limited to six students, each of
whom would have one double-hung window (previously identified as a candidate for restoration) from WSP's building to perform work on over the course of the class. Work would involve removing the window, removing glazing, repairing wooden components with either dutchman repair techniques or epoxy/consolodants, sanding, priming, painting, and reinstallation. Though the primary focus will be on wooden double hung windows, some The Waldorf School
areas involving metal or leaded/stained
glass will be covered. By participating in the
course,
the student would learn specifically about the construction
and mechanics of historic wood windows, window restoration techniques, and insulation and weatherization issues. In a broader sense, the course would provide insight into the overall effort to rehabilitate historic windows and allow the student a broader perspective in determining the feasibility of historic window repair versus replacement. The student will earn 3 credits for this course.

Enrollment Limit: 12
The course provides an intensive foundation in the proper techniques of working within the field of architectural conservation. Primary emphasis is on learning directly from specific buildings, structures, objects or sites as artifacts, with secondary emphasis on placing these findings within a practical preservation planning context. Connections to the broader community and to the preservation profession will be continually discovered and introduced throughout the course. Students should enroll in both sections as the class will extend over both six week sessions. Students will earn a total of 6 credits for the course.
