“The Conservation Assessment Program at the University Art Gallery”

Isabelle Chartier and Wendy Bennett

In May 2013, the University Art Gallery was chosen to participate in the 2013 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP), a program supported by Heritage Preservation through a cooperative agreement with the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The CAP assists museums by providing funds for professional conservation specialists to identify conservation needs of collections and recommend ways to correctly improve conditions.

Wendy Bennett, paper conservator and CAP assessor, met with Isabelle Chartier in June 2013 for a two-day site visit of the gallery, during which she studied environmental controls, storage facilities, gallery procedures and collection management policies. This colloquium aims to offer a summary of the assessor’s report; Wendy Bennett and Isabelle Chartier will discuss the main problems addressed during the site visit and the solutions recommended on the short and longer terms.

The CAP inspired the September exhibition: Rediscover – The Collection Revealed, which opens on September 5, 2013.
