Graduate Students
Kathryn Martin
Europe before 1750
Realizing a void in scholarship on Northern European art, Kathryn Martin has focused on medieval Scandinavian art for both her master's thesis and now for her doctoral research. Currently engaged in research on the iconography of Sts Erik and Olaf in medieval Swedish art, Martin hopes to highlight the relationship between their appearance in Swedish altarpieces and wall paintings and the popularity and practices of the cult of St Erik in late medieval Sweden, as well as the cult's connection to political posturing in the medieval Swedish court. Additionally, Martin studies panel and wall paintings in the Nordic countries, with a special interest in iconographic anomalies occurring in Scandinavian art when compared to pieces with similar topics produced in mainland Europe.
