Race-ing the Museum: Moving Forward

Kirk Savage

Last May, Shirin Fozi and Kirk Savage co-led a week-long workshop with 12 Pitt faculty and grad students from nine different departments.  The workshop broadly addressed issues of racial representation and inclusion.  We met with curators, educators, and archivists at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Teenie Harris Archive, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Heinz History Center, the Allegheny City Gallery on the Northside, Pitt’s special collections and multiple archives, and the Art Lending Library in Braddock.

Out of this amazing and intensive process have come several concrete, exciting projects which are moving forward this year, some of them in the mix for additional funding especially from the Year of Diversity.  These projects push our department and the university in new directions in community engagement and social activism, and also showcase the interesting research and ideas of faculty and students across a wide range of disciplines.

Please come and meet this extraordinary group of workshop participants and hear from them very brief descriptions of their projects and goals.  We will make sure to reserve time in the session for discussion and networking as well.
