1407 Architecture in the Eighteenth Century
(offered infrequently)
The luxury of French and German Rococo, the discovery of Pompeii, the startup of industrial architecture, the fierce rationalism of neoclassicism, and the far-out romanticism of the "instant ruins" that were built in England and France--what era promised more than the eighteenth century? This course traces the multiple shifts and conflicts in the era 1700-1825, with emphasis on the interchange of architecture with science, technology, the French and industrial revolutions, and the new demands of public life. Geographically, the course looks at Italy, France, Germany, Russia, England, and America.
